The Way of the Bodhisattva
The Way of the Bodhisattva L35 Questions regarding rebirth in Pure Land without bodhicitta
In this concluding session of the third chapter on "Taking Hold of Bodhicitta," Khenpo Sodargye expounds on the practice of generating joy for the sake of others. The lecture utilizes metaphors such as a resting tree, a bridge, and the sun to illustrate how Bodhicitta relieves the suffering of samsara. Khenpo addresses theological debates, including whether Arhats possess Bodhicitta and the validity of being reborn in the Pure Land without it. He compares the study atmospheres in Tibetan monasteries versus lay groups in Han regions and critically warns against the commercialization of Dharma, specifically viewing financial offerings as the "essence" of teaching. The session concludes with the visualization of inviting all sentient beings as guests to the banquet of enlightenment and emphasizes the importance of memorizing key chapters of the Bodhicharyavatara.
"The Way of the Bodhisattva" is one of the most highly recommended texts of Khenpo Sodargye’s lifetime. He once said that among all the treatises he has translated and taught, this is the one that everyone should study thoroughly at least once. For those with faith, it guides the mind deeply into Buddhist principles and inspires a broad awakening of Bodhicitta. Even for those without faith, studying it can help reduce anger, stress, and suffering. If studied systematically from beginning to end, this text becomes a lifelong source of spiritual benefit. This course, taught by Khenpo Sodargye in 2006, consists of 201 lessons and carefully guides practitioners to cultivate Bodhicitta and enter the Bodhisattva path, using the clearest, most practical, and systematic approach to help students advance to higher dimensions of life and mind.
