The Vimalakirti Sutra
The Vimalakirti Sutra Lesson 10 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye The Skillful Means of Vimalakirti in Worldly Affairs
In this lesson of the Vimalakirti Sutra, Khenpo Sodargye discusses the profound skillful means employed by the layman Vimalakirti. The teaching begins with the symbolism of the sun and moon emblem, representing the impartial radiance of wisdom and compassion. Khenpo then clarifies how practitioners should view the seemingly unconventional actions of Mahayana Bodhisattvas. The core of the chapter illustrates how Vimalakirti lived outwardly as a wealthy householder with a family, yet maintained the pure discipline of a monastic without any attachment to the three realms. He used the six paramitas—generosity, morality, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom—to gather and guide sentient beings according to their capacities. Whether engaging in commerce, visiting gambling halls, interacting with various philosophical schools, or wandering through worldly crossroads, his actions were never driven by personal desire. Instead, his involvement in all aspects of society was a skillful method to deliver beings from suffering and lead them onto the Mahayana path, demonstrating the true integration of Dharma into worldly life.
