The Vimalakirti Sutra Lesson 09 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye The Skillful Means and Unhindered Wisdom of Layman Vimalakirti
In this lesson of the Vimalakirti Sutra, Khenpo Sodargye introduces the Chapter on Skillful Means, focusing on the extraordinary qualities of Layman Vimalakirti. The teaching clarifies that although Vimalakirti lived the life of a householder in the city of Vaisali, his spiritual realization and skillful means allowed him to benefit both himself and others flawlessly. Khenpo points out that lay practitioners can attain profound achievements that even surpass those of some monastics. The lesson details Vimalakirti's boundless merit: having made offerings to countless past Buddhas, mastering the profound tolerance of the non-arising of phenomena, and possessing unhindered eloquence, miraculous powers, and perfect retentive memory (Dharani). Furthermore, achieving the four fearlessnesses allowed him to naturally subdue the four demons and external obstacles without force. By maintaining a deep understanding of emptiness and resolving worldly attachments, everyday fears and demonic hindrances naturally dissipate. The session also emphasizes Vimalakirti's incredible ability to perfectly understand the varied minds and capacities of all sentient beings, teaching them the Dharma accordingly while remaining unflinchingly dedicated to the Mahayana path of Bodhicitta.
