The Vimalakirti Sutra
The Vimalakirti Sutra L12 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye The Four Great Kings and the role of Dharma protectors
In this session, Khenpo Sodargye continues teaching the Vimalakīrti Sutra, beginning with reflections on impermanence and providing an overview of chapters completed so far. He elaborates on the three great Bodhisattva qualities—wisdom, compassion, and capacity—comparing them to the sun, moon, and earth, and urges practitioners to integrate into all levels of society rather than retreating rigidly into narrow circles. Khenpo then expounds on Vimalakīrti's skillful engagement in the Brahma and Trayastrimsha heavens, explaining how he taught supreme wisdom to those strong in samadhi but weak in insight, and impermanence to gods immersed in pleasure. A substantial portion of the class is devoted to the Four Great Kings and the role of Dharma protectors in both worldly and spiritual life, with personal anecdotes from Larung Gar. The teaching then enters the core of the sutra: Vimalakīrti manifests illness to draw people of all social strata to him, giving him the opportunity to expound the Dharma. Khenpo systematically explains each metaphor used to describe the body—foam, water bubbles, mirages, banana trees, dreams, and shadows—establishing that the body is impermanent, empty, produced by past karma, and entirely unworthy of deep attachment.
