The Vimalakirti Sutra
The Vimalakirti Sutra L15 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye Beyond Labels #khenposodargye #Vimalakirti Sutra L15
In this session of the Vimalakirti Sutra, Khenpo Sodargye opens with course schedule announcements at Larung Gar, including a coming month-long break, and stresses the importance of attending class and maintaining serious practice. He then conducts a Tibetan oral transmission of the sutra before beginning Chapter Three: the Disciples Chapter. After introducing the background of the ten great disciples, Khenpo focuses on Venerable Mahakasyapa, foremost in ascetic discipline. The Buddha instructed Mahakasyapa to beg for alms with a mind of equality, making no distinction between rich and poor. Vimalakirti appears and challenges Mahakasyapa's biased compassion, delivering a comprehensive teaching: alms must be received for the sake of threefold emptiness and not personal benefit; the six sense faculties must be engaged without grasping or aversion; all phenomena are ultimately without self-nature and should be seen as empty; the Eight Emancipations can be entered without abandoning the Eight Wrongs when one abides in non-dual wisdom; and the mind of equality is the foundation of authentic practice and genuine offering. This radical teaching dissolves the boundary between the pure and impure, the bound and the liberated. By the end of the encounter, Mahakasyapa develops profound faith in Vimalakirti and turns his focus from Hinayana to Mahayana propagation.
