The Shurangama Sutra
The Shurangama Sutra L48 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye The Immediate Joy of Awakening to True Reality
In Lesson 48 of the Shurangama Sutra, the assembly, led by Ananda, experiences profound physical and mental serenity after hearing the Buddha's strict reprimands, realizing the vastness of the Tathagatagarbha (Matrix of the Thus-Come One). However, Ananda acknowledges that despite understanding this theoretically, he is like a wanderer given a grand mansion without the key to enter—highlighting the absolute necessity of actual Zen meditation practice over mere erudition. Ananda earnestly beseeches the Buddha for the method to overcome beginningless habitual tendencies and firmly enter the Bodhisattva path. In response, considering both the present assembly and sentient beings of future Dharma-ending ages, the Buddha introduces the "Two Definitive Principles" of the initial resolve. He emphasizes the first principle: the mind at the causal stage of practice must correspond with the unconditioned fruition stage; one cannot attain the eternal, unconditioned Bodhi using a mind bound by arising and perishing.
