The Shurangama Sutra
The Shurangama Sutra L43 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye Why Are We Lost in the Illusion of the World?
This session of the Shurangama Sutra teaching by Khenpo Sodargye shifts focus to the psychological and karmic mechanisms that chain sentient beings to Samsara—specifically the perpetuation of karma and afflictions. He identifies the three foundational roots of worldly entrapment: the emotional desire leading to endless generations of families, the underlying desire to kill which causes beings to devour one another, and the systemic urge to steal by taking the lives of others unconsented. These passions forge a relentless cycle of karmic debt and retaliation. The teaching then answers Venerable Purna’s query on how pure intrinsic enlightenment suddenly generated the mountains, rivers, and the myriad illusory appearances. Using analogies like a lost traveler in a village and a person seeing mirages due to an eye disease, the Buddha elucidates that confusion is baseless. Once true awakening is realized, just as optical illusions vanish when a disease is cured, these unfounded worldly delusions cannot reappear.
