Is the World Real? The Matrix and the Concept of Illusion
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch L30
Bhikshu Zhidao practiced for over ten years but remained confused by the Nirvana Sutra, specifically the verse "When arising and ceasing are extinguished, the quietude of extinction is bliss." He constructed a logical contradiction: if the physical body perishes (suffering) and the Dharma-body is inanimate like wood or stone, there is no subject left to experience the "bliss" of extinction. In this lecture, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng corrects this dualistic view, explaining that Nirvana is not a sensation to be felt by a subject, nor is it a state of total annihilation. The session also recounts the historical story of the Buddha in a past life as the Himalayan Youth sacrificing his body to a Rakshasa to hear this verse, and clarifies why the Buddha sometimes used the term "Self" (Tathagatagarbha) to help beings avoid the trap of nihilism.
