Dharma has no sudden or gradual, but people have sharp or dull faculties
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch L33
This session begins Chapter Eight, "Sudden and Gradual," analyzing the differences between the Northern School of Shenxiu and the Southern School of Huineng. The lecture explains that while the essence of Dharma is one, individual capacities create the distinction between sudden and gradual realization. It recounts the story of Shenxiu sending his disciple Zhicheng to Caoxi as a "spy" to learn Huineng’s teachings. Huineng criticizes Shenxiu’s method of "stabilizing the mind to contemplate purity" and "sitting for long periods without lying down," describing it as a form of bondage rather than true liberation. The session compares the two masters' definitions of Discipline, Meditation, and Wisdom: Shenxiu views them as behavioral and mental corrections (avoiding evil, practicing good, purifying the mind), whereas Huineng defines them as inherent qualities of the self-nature (mind-ground without wrong, without delusion, without disturbance). Hearing this, Zhicheng attains realization.
