Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra
How much of who we become is shaped by the people, habits, and environments around us?
In Lesson 07 of the Ksitigarbha Sutra, Khenpo Sodargye explains that the minds of ordinary beings are unstable and easily influenced by external conditions. Positive surroundings can nurture kindness and virtue, while harmful environments can gradually reshape even a good person’s character.
He shares the striking story of an elephant trained to execute criminals. After living near a monastery and repeatedly hearing monks chant the Dharma, the elephant became gentle and refused to kill.
This lesson also explores the extraordinary vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, the story of two kings who chose different paths to help beings, and the moving account of Bright Eyes, whose love for her deceased mother expanded into a vow to liberate all beings from suffering.
