The Shurangama Sutra
Watch on FireLotus →
6:30 AM. The alarm goes off twice.
I hit snooze, hoping for just a few more minutes, but the upstairs renovations start right on cue. The roar of a power drill drags me out of bed, leaving a heavy, suffocating feeling in my chest.
We've all had mornings like this. It’s a small thing, but it's enough to cast a shadow over the rest of the day.
Inherently, sound is completely neutral—it's just vibration and frequency. Annoyance is a label we stick on it. Yet in the moment, that frustration feels so incredibly real it’s hard to shake.
It reminds me of a story from the Surangama Sutra.
A man named Yajnadatta looked in the mirror one morning and loved his reflection. But the second he stepped away and couldn't see his face, he panicked, running down the street screaming that his head had gone missing.
People laughed at his absurdity. But the Buddha told this story because it mirrors all of us.
We constantly look for ourselves in external "mirrors"—our work, our relationships, or what others think of us. When that validation vanishes, we’re left empty and panicking.
The Surangama Sutra explains this perfectly. Our minds are naturally clear, but life clutters them with noise. Eventually, we start mistaking this noise for who we are. We're thrilled when praised, devastated when ignored, and thrown completely off balance by the slightest disturbance.
There’s a line in the sutra: "To add perception to perception is the root of ignorance."
In other words, once we layer our subjective judgments over pure awareness, trouble begins.
Think about the drill. What hit my ears was just sound. But my mind immediately started spinning: It’s too loud. It’s too early. I can't catch a break. It wasn't the noise that trapped me; it was my own emotional pile-on.
That is what "perception on perception" means. It is never the external world that disturbs us, but our own stubborn interpretations.
The Surangama Sutra won't give you instant enlightenment. It’s a long, quiet road. But walk it long enough, and things stop bothering you so much. The drill will still ring out, but the ripples in your mind will have long since faded.
Yajnadatta never lost his head. What he was frantically searching for was safely with him the whole time; he just got fooled by a reflection.
Peace of mind is exactly the same. It never leaves; it just gets buried under our busy thoughts. Like wind sweeping across a pond, the ripples hide the clear water below. When the wind dies down, the water clears on its own. You don't have to force it.
So, the next time a loud noise wakes you up, don't rush to get mad. Just lie there and listen to things exactly as they are. The noise comes and goes. Your mood rises and falls.
And that is completely fine.
