Is the world I see really the same one you see?
The Shurangama Sutra
The Shurangama Sutra L25
The heart of today’s session is this: The world you perceive is a mirror of your own mind. When your inner landscape is purified, the world you inhabit naturally becomes pure. Collective Illusion: Whether it is your individual journey (individual karma) or the crises we face together (collective karma), these experiences are, in essence, a collective illusion. Do not get bogged down in judging "right" or "wrong" in the heat of the moment; these distinctions are ultimately empty and illusory. The Trap of Spiritual Ego: True practice is not about chasing supernatural powers or seeking "miracles." Furthermore, one should never pretend to have insights they don't possess—avoid the trap of playing the "fortune teller" or using divination to impress others. The Goal of Wisdom: Real wisdom lies in seeing through the illusion, not in rolling around in it. Instead of getting entangled in the drama of the phenomenal world, your goal is to return to a state of profound inner stillness.
"The Shurangama Sutra" is an important Buddhist scripture whose core teaching reveals the inherent Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature) true mind of all sentient beings. Its main contents include the "Seven Places to Seek the Mind" which breaks through attachment to the false mind, pointing out that the discriminating consciousness is not the true mind; the "Eight Returns to Discern Seeing" which shows that the seeing-nature is the true essence; the "Twenty-five Means to Perfect Penetration" which presents methods of cultivation and realization; and the "Fifty Skandha-demons" which warn against deviations in practice. The entire sutra aims to break through the false and reveal the true, enabling sentient beings to recognize their inherently complete Tathagatagarbha nature, understand the truth that all phenomena are mind-only manifestations like dreams and illusions, and ultimately attain the Shurangama Samadhi.
