This is a lecture given by Khenpo Sodargye at Guangxi University on February 27, 2012, with the theme Buddhist Low-Desire Living. In this lecture, Khenpo profoundly analyzes the root cause of today's global environmental crisis from a Buddhist perspective—humanity's unrestrained greed. He points out that environmental problems such as water pollution, deforestation, and ozone layer destruction essentially stem from people's excessive consumption and waste in clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Khenpo proposes that the key to achieving true low-carbon living lies in low-desire —disciplining the mind and cultivating contentment with few wants. He emphasizes that even possessing all the world's wealth cannot bring happiness if the heart is filled with greed; conversely, those who know contentment can attain genuine happiness even with simple material conditions. Through comparisons between past and present, East and West, Khenpo illustrates that modern people's pit of desire can never be filled, and this endless pursuit is destroying the Earth. He calls on the audience to reflect: environmental protection is not merely an external technical issue, but requires inner environmental protection. Only by reducing greed through daily practice can we fundamentally protect the environment while attaining inner peace and happiness.
